Almost done with the book to get back to blogging...

...but before I go back to work, I wanna touch on something right quick in regards to shooting of Mike Brown in Ferguson, Missouri last week and the mayhem that followed

It's frustrating when negroes keep bringing up Black-on-Black violence whenever police brutality occurs

And the funny this is...

...Ferguson is a low income town that's nearly 70% Black and had NO homicides this year until Mike Brown got killed by cops

The difference with Black-on-Black crime, or any other within race crime, is that the guilty are prosecuted and justice is served more than 90% of the time. However, police brutality and crime against primarily Black men are given a slap on the wrist and justice is usually not served

The harshest penalty for an officer is a desk job or vacation with pay

That's why people are marching. Wrong is wrong and there should be justice across the board. Equality and justice for all. Simple as that

2014 Harlem Book Fair RECAP!

The Harlem Book Fair was this past Saturday, and the festival was uneventful...I love Harlem, whether it's the history, the food, the vendors, the swag, and we sure as hell can't forget the LADIES...who I think are the best lookin' group of Black women in NYC

But that's another blog

Something was missing at this year's Harlem Book Fair

Without writing a novel about the event, I'd broken down my observation in 5-points

Anyway, here are my FIVE honest thoughts about this year's Harlem Book Fair:

1) You're stupid to buy a table as an author...

...unless you KNOW you're gonna make your money back and THEN SOME

I let newbie authors slide because they don't know better

I saw A LOT of authors go home with full boxes of books…you should’ve seen the looks on their faces…but hey, people gotta learn the hard way

Oh yeah, the "Is the book on Kindle?" question is a low key way of saying "I'm not interested in buying your book"

But that’s another blog

If you're not a well known author, or don't have a killer street team to help you with sales, then you're in for a looooooooong day

I sold books straight from my book bag

Even that's a gift and a curse because negroes love presentation, and they figure you're "bootleg" if you're selling hand-to-hand instead of holding down a table

I still sold a good amount of books to financially hold me down til next weekend

2) The crowd is dwindling each year, and I saw a lot of empty tables and spots not being used

Hmmmm...I wonder why (sarcasm)

3) I'm NOT there to socialize with other authors

I saw too many authors skinnin' and grinnin' and acting like groupies toward other authors who were more well known

This one reader had asked me why I don't wanna chat with other authors...

...and I kindly told her I'm there to MAKE MONEY, not use the fair as a glorified meet and greet

If I have a specific question to ask an author, I'll ask, but I'm not chit chatting on general principle

4) Too many window shoppers...

...not enough buyers

Book clubs are infamous for doing that shit...there's this one book club that traveled all the way from South Carolina to Harlem and didn't buy one book at the fair...shit, a lot of book clubs didn't have anything in their hands except sweat

Harlem Book Fair is becoming a fashion show if it's not already is

5) The ONLY reason why I attend the Harlem Book Fair is to use the event as a way to sell books to readers who are too lazy to order my books online...

...and to also network with entities that can possibly help my brand

Otherwise, I wouldn't waste my time going

Matter of fact, A LOT of people didn't go this year...

...I didn't see familiar faces I've seen from past book fairs

At this rate, Harlem Book Fair is gonna be irrelevant in 3 years

“Nigga” is a very powerful word…it’s one of the few things white folks don't have control of…Black folks can say it, but white folks can’t (at least without consequence)…and that fact burns a hole in their soul...now they wanna make a big fuss about athletes saying “nigga”

Gimme me a break

It’s funny because you’ll most likely hear Black athletes saying “nigga” toward each other than a white person saying it (with the "er," not the "a") towards Blacks

"Nigga" is a control issue in this case, not some good Samaritan who wanna help out the image of Blacks…white folks are STILL gonna say “nigger” even when Blacks stop saying "niggA" among each other…real talk

Okay, I'm gonna keep this short and sweet because there's pretty much nothing to say...is the album cover distasteful and disrespectful to El Hajj Malik El Shabazz commonly known to us as Malcolm X? Yes...was Nicki starving for attention through controversy? HELL YEAH!!!

Malcolm wasn't a nosey "lookin' ass nigga" in this flick...

...he held the artillery by the window to protect his family from death threats and possible harm

Shit was real back then (shit, it's STILL is today)

KRS-1 posed like Malcolm for the cover of his By Any Means Necessary album...but the difference is that he was conscious with his style, spittin' rhymes to stimulate your mind...KRS was/is the teacher of Hip-Hop...real talk

But let me put a positive spin on Nicki's album cover

A lot of 90s babies and younger don't know who the hell Malcolm X was...you got students at Malcolm Shabazz High School in Newark, New Jersey who don't even know anything about him...they probably think he's some white man who used to be the President of the United States and died rich

But seriously, maybe the album cover can be used as a tool to get the youngin's to AT LEAST have Malcolm X under their radar...they might see the fuss about Nicki using his image in a niggardly way and unknowingly educate themselves about one of the freedom fighters for not only Black people, but for humanity in general...
